22nd October 2015
Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2015

(Awards exhibition)

The annual Wildlife Photographer Of The Year competition, which is held in London, has just been completed for 2015. This prestigious competition is the equivalent of the Oscars for the Wildlife Photography industry held its Black Tie awards evening on the 13th Oct.
The red carpet event is held at the British Natural History Museum where each year the winning images for that year is unveiled to the world media and public alike.
This year was once again a magnificent event, which left all us in awe.
Once again there was work produced on an exceptional level… and some that left me wondering what the judges were thinking.

On a personal note it was a huge honour to have my son Juan van den Heever who has put so much time into his photography reap the rewards for his efforts.

This is the 3rd time in the last 5 yrs that I have managed to get placed in the competition. A huge feeling of accomplishment seeing as I have only entered 5 times.
It was also an unbelievable honour to have Frans Lanting my lifelong photography-hero give me the vote as his personal favourite image of all the images on display.
Sergey Gorshkopv one of my personal new-era photographer favourites had his picture next to mine at the exhibit and it was great touching base with him again (we were both at the 2013 awards as well) His picture of the Oryx in the dunes was another his jaw-dropping image.

Well done again to all my South African colleagues:
- Brent Stirton: Your work is inspirational and such an honour to call you my friend..!
- Thomas Pechak: The best underwater photographer I know of… period! (Sorry we missed you at the awards this year)
- Morkel Erasmus: Congrats on getting the cover image for the book Morkel well done!
- Tristan Dicks: Tristan had a beautiful image of a Pangolin I’ve never seen in life. Also the image that was chosen as the cover image for the event invitations.
- Neil Aldridge: For me the best Urban Wildlife image of the awards..!
- Juan van den Heever: The best youth image… but then I might be a bit biased. Juan you make me the proudest dad on the planet ☺
